–Having low self-esteem is not something that a regional citizen should suffer from. There’s everything essential for a good everyday life here, said Annika Saarikko (center-party) in the event panel of Huittisten Toriareena, when she was asked what Huittinen is better at than the bigger cities.

The other panelists, the chairman of the city council Jouni Isotalo (NCP) and youth councilor Aino Kylälehtonen, agreed with Saarikko. The panel discussion dealt with economy, vitality, politics, and work as a builder of well-being.

Saarikko thought that Huittinen will get by if it takes care of the matters that it has already put work into, as the vitality and leisure activities for example. Saarikko also thinks that Huittinen should focus on better family politics in the future.

–To be tempting for a family with kids, Huittinen must have its daycare and schools in good shape, and there has to be playgrounds and hobby opportunities. There also has to be job opportunities and good transport connections to jobs further away.

Another point Saarikko made was that municipalities often dream that someone from outside would appear and start a company there. She, however, thinks that we should invest in supporting our own, already existing companies.

Aino Kylälehtonen brought up that the feeling of safety and peacefulness is among the strengths of smaller towns. Added pluses are that a person can do business in both the city and the countryside.

–The location, when talking about remote work, is not insignificant, either. Road and bus connections are important, as well as good internet connection, she mentioned.

Jouni Isotalo reminded that Satakunta is one of the most industrialized provinces in Finland.

–And that means that not all work can be done remotely. There are service professions and industrial jobs where you have to show up every morning. It means that the traffic connections must be in good condition. Here, the main road is a problem, because it hasn’t been improved.

Opposition leader Saarikko highlighted the investment of 500 million in a one-hour train between Turku and Helsinki in the government program.

–It is not right in a situation where there is a repair debt on the existing road.
