Last fall nine international students started in the upper secondary school of Lauttakylä and almost all of them are continuing into the next semester.
The principal of the upper secondary school, Timo Mäkinen, talks about the interesting opportunity the school gave in the joint application.
This year there was a bit more students applying than during the previous years. It doesn’t change the big picture, which is that in the following years the age groups will collapse in numbers.
The mayor, Viveka Lanne, reminds that international students are also important for the liveliness of the town.
When the age groups are shrinking, international students are a way to strengthen the liveliness of the school and to ensure a local high-quality school for the students.
The problem with accepting international students has revealed itself to be the alarming shortage of rental apartments in Huittinen.
The occupancy rate of the rental apartments in the town is over 90 both in private markets and the municipal apartments of Huittinen. Furnished apartments are basically not available.
The municipality decided to dedicate 40 000 euros to pay for the rent during the possible reservation time and to furnish the apartments the following fall. There was no provision for the costs when making the budget.
